Those who have been issued with a PESEL number with UKR status on the basis of a declaration, without presenting a photo ID, should confirm their identity at any local authority office by 31 August 2026, by presenting a valid travel document, e.g. a passport. This requirement must be met in order to retain UKR status and the rights associated with it.
📌 Particular attention should be given to minors whose identity was previously verified on the basis of their parents’ or legal guardians’ documents.
📌 If a new passport has been issued since a PESEL UKR number had been assigned, the document details must also be updated at the relevant office.
The update is free of charge and does not result in a change to the PESEL number – only the details relating to the identity document are updated.
It is worth noting that retaining UKR status may also be important for those planning to apply for a CUKR residence card, as obtaining this card depends, amongst other things, on holding valid UKR status.
